0: Introduction
This is Selden's partial list of Web pages which describe
Philmont Scout Ranch, as well as some other hiking and Scouting topics.
It was started when a friend going to Philmont asked for some
pointers to Web pages describing others' experiences there.
Since then, it jest grew.
Please don't hesitate to send e'mail to
seb@lepp.cornell.edu
about any Web pages that you'd like to see included or if you notice
any corrections I should make.
The Web grows too fast for any one person to keep up.
Most of these links are to other Web sites. Since they're also
indexed on public search engines (which is how I found most of them),
I haven't asked permission to include them.
Not surprisingly, some of those links have become obsolete
and don't work anymore. Please
let me know when you encounter
one that fails.
Those links which include the comment "provided by..." are
located on this Web server. Permission has been granted by their
authors to publish their articles here.

The Philmont Forum
- Philmont Mailing List (operational October 26, 2001!)
Note: this list is probably the primary resource for discussions
about Philmont. Traffic fluctuates seasonally, but 50 messages per day
are common during training season. If this is a problem, consider subscribing in digest mode.
- The
Women's Philmont Mailing list is a "members only" list
at
Yahoo! Groups.
- Other Philmont related mailing lists at

Note: Except for the "High Adventure" list, these lists all went silent when USScouts revived the Philmont

-
Philmont_List members only mailing list at Yahoo!
You can subscribe to any Yahoo! mailing list by sending an
e'mail message to the address listname-subscribe.
The contents of the message are ignored.
For example, a message to
high_adventure-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
will make you a member of that list. Visit the groups' home pages
for more information. Their links are above.
"Members only" just means that you have to join the list before
you can post or browse the archives. A Yahoo! ID may also be
needed for browsing. In contrast, "Public" lists can be browsed

2.3: Compilations of Advice
-
The Philmont Advisor's Guide
The Philmont Advisor's Guide is an unofficial publication developed and
supported with input from experienced advisors and Philmont rangers. This
90+ page guide has proven invaluable to legions of scouters for more than
fifteen years, yet remains fresh, timely, and insightful. The guide is a
compilation of input from a network of advisors and staffers, which is what
makes it unique. That network also includes experienced female advisors,
rangers and ranger trainers, which adds an important perspective for the
growing Venturing population at Philmont - and gives women the option of
contacting peers "off-line" through contact info in the guide for questions.
Information and orders for Coop Wright's Philmont Advisor's Guide are now
being handled by his Baltimore Area Council scouting colleague Mimi Hatch.
The guide continues to be updated several times each year by its network of
contributors. More information is available at
http://www.philmontadvisorsguide.com/pag.html, and
Mimi can be contacted as philmontadvisorsguide at gmail.com.

- 3.1: 1998 & 1999 Itineraries.
Notes:
Due to the drought and to the "Ponil Complex" fires, 2002 treks into the
North Country, north of Highway 64 as well as into the Valle Vidal, were
rerouted to camps in the central and southern portions of the Ranch.
Philmont provided many of the same camp programs and difficulty
levels in the new routes, but the details of the individual Itineraries
wern't available until a visit to Logistics. Because of safety concerns
and limited resources, variations from the assigned schedules are not
possible. They always need to know where everyone will be every night so
they can be contacted in case of fire, bear or other emergencies.
All trek routes were revised and renumbered for the summer of
2000, and minor adjustments continue to be made. As a result,
the 1998 descriptions no longer apply in detail.
The following descriptions of several Philmont Trek Routes
were originally posted to the Bowline Philmont mailing
list during the spring and summer of 1998.
They are included here with the permission of their authors.
- Provided by Wally Feurtado
Philmont Training Coordinator,

- Trek Route #9 (short description)
(2000: #4?)
- Trek Route #9 (extended travelog)
(2000: #4?)
This extended description of Trek Route 9, provided by Wally Feurtado, is
not intended for anyone who is actually going to Philmont.
Reading it could spoil the experience for you.
Instead, it should be given to family members who won't
have the opportunity to go. It's written so that they can
follow along and learn what is happening day by day.
Its dates and expedition number must be adjusted to correspond
to your own expedition.

- 3.4: 2002 Itineraries.
The descriptions below were provided in response to questions
about trek routes for the summer of 2002.
They were derived from previous experiences, however,
not from treks performed during the summer of 2002.
Some of the descriptions are also included above, in the sections for
the years when they were experienced.

- Please don't hesitate to send e'mail to
seb@lepp.cornell.edu
about any Web pages that you'd like to see included or if you notice
any corrections I should make.
The Web grows too fast for any one person to keep up.
- Most of these links are to other Web sites. Since they're also
indexed on public search engines (which is how I found most of them),
I haven't asked permission to include them.
Not surprisingly, some of those links have become obsolete
and don't work anymore. Please
let me know when you encounter
one that fails.
- Those links which include the comment "provided by..." are
located on this Web server. Permission has been granted by their
authors to publish their articles here.

Obsolete links: not functional on 22-Apr-2008
I'll be testing more links in the near future, but i'd certainly
appreciate anyone letting me know of any others that fail
and of any addresses which have changed. Send e'mail to
